Postseason play for high school basketball begins today with AHSAA area tournaments while AISA region tournaments started Monday.
AHSAA area tournaments are hosted by the top seed, determined during regular season play. Girls tournaments must be completed by Wednesday and the boys have to be finished by Thursday.
Each area tournament winner and runner-up from 16 classes in 6A-1A advance to sub-regional play on Feb. 9 for girls and Feb. 10 for boys. Area tournament winners host a predetermined area runner-up in sub-regional play with those winners moving on to one of four regionals.
In Class 7A, each area tournament winner and runner advance straight to regional play.
AHSAA regional tournaments will be played at four sites: Northwest at Wallace-Hanceville, Northeast at Jacksonville State, Central at Bill Harris Arena in Birmingham and South at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery. Regional tournaments are Feb. 13-22.
Each AHSAA regional winner in all seven classes earns a spot in the state basketball championships at BJCC’s Legacy Arena Feb. 26-March 2 in Birmingham.
Each AISA class (A, AA, AAA) play region tournaments, culminating with the final four on Feb. 7-8 at the Montgomery Multiplex and championships scheduled for Feb. 9.
