Mobile man accused in Chickasaw motel murder captured at Mississippi casino

A 48-year-old Mobile man accused of a Chickasaw motel murder has been captured on the Mississippi coast, the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

Tuesday morning, Chickasaw police contacted the sheriff’s office and asked for assistance regarding a death at the Best Inn on West Lee Street in Chickasaw.

Officers found 38-year-old Christopher Ryan Martin dead from an apparent gunshot wound underneath his chin. A 9mm shell casing was found underneath Martin, near his neck, according to the sheriff’s office.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video from the hallway outside the room where Martin’s body was found and saw a man enter the room about 3:40 a.m. About a minute later, a gunshot was heard and the man was seen leaving the room and departing the hotel in a dark SUV, according to the sheriff’s office.

Ultimately, the suspect was identified as 48-year-old Cornelius Lavette Smith.

Mobile County investigators, along with U.S. Marshals, tracked Smith to Island View Casino in Gulfport, Miss. He was taken into custody without incident and is awaiting extradition to Mobile, where he will be formally charged with murder.
