Basketball roundup: Huntsville boys win 23rd straight
Top-ranked Huntsville ran its winning streak to 23 straight on Friday, beating city rival Grissom 56-45 on the road to clinch its fourth straight Class 7A, Area 7 regular-season title.
The 26-1 Crimson Panthers were led by senior Caleb Harrison with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Juniors Simon Walker and Brayden Rivers chipped in 10 each and J.D. Gossett added 9.
Both teams were strong on defense with Grissom holding the Panthers to 41 percent from the floor (20-of-48). Huntsville was able to hit 8-of-21 from behind the 3-point arc. The Panthers made 61 percent from the foul line.
Huntsville held Grissom to only 35 percent from the field (15-for-43) and 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Grissom hit 10-of-12 free throws (83 percent).
Senior Brendan Martin led the Tigers with 15 points and junior Javon Alexander added 10.
Huntsville outscored Grissom 11-3 in the first quarter holding the Tigers (14-12) to only 1-for-10 from the field to set the defensive tone of the game. Both teams shot better in the second quarter, scoring 15 apiece as Huntsville took a 26-18 lead into the half.
Grissom was able to play Huntsville even again in the third quarter matching the Crimson Panthers’ 18 points, but faced a 44-36 deficit heading into the final period. Grissom cut the lead to 6 on two occasions, but could never get any closer as Huntsville closed out the Tigers 12-9 in the fourth quarter.
The win assures Huntsville will host the area tournament in two weeks playing fourth-seeded Sparkman and Grissom will play No. 3 seed Albertville.

West Morgan 60, Westminster Christian 56
West Morgan avenged an earlier home loss to Westminster Christian, outscoring the Wildcats 21-11 in the fourth quarter for the win.
West Morgan (11-12) hit 52 percent of its shots from the floor, making 24-of-46 attempts, and was 6-of-8 from the foul line. The Rebel defense held Westminster to 41 percent shooting (22-for-53), but the Wildcats were able to connect on 7-of-21 from 3-point range.
Freshman Landon Henderson led West Morgan with 21 points. Junior Josh Garland chipped in 12 and senior Joseph Garland added 10.
Senior Kyle Everleth led the Westminster (4-14) with 17 and sophomore Maks Leatherwood added 13.

Albertville 73, Guntersville 54
The Aggies claimed the Marshall County Tournament title on Saturday with the win. Albertville shot 53.1 percent from the floor and used its full-court pressure to hold Guntersville to 31.6 percent shooting.
Albertville led 12-10 after one quarter, 32-18 at the half and 55-35 headed into the fourth period.
Cooper Colvin hit 9-of-11 shots to lead Albertville with 22 points. Sam Barclift scored 16 with 6 assists and Hunter Smith had 10 points with 8 rebounds.
The Aggies (22-6) will host Boaz on Monday and Class 6A No. 1 Buckhorn on Tuesday before playing Grissom in the 7A, Area 7 tournament at Huntsville High on Feb. 6.
Albertville 57, Sparkman 39
The Aggies improved to 21-6 with the Class 7A, Area 7 win over Sparkman on Friday. Albertville led 15-11 after one period, 26-21 at the half and 37-29 headed into the fourth quarter.
Cooper Colvin led the winners with 24 points. Jon Wesley Seay scored 10 points and Sam Barclift finished with 9.
Malachi Chavis led Sparkman with 12 points. Jamarion Matthews scored 9 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Caleb Lightford finished with 6 steals for the Senators (7-19).
Cullman 54, Hartselle 41
The Bearcats rallied from a 14-8 first-quarter deficit to lead 28-23 at the half and outscored visiting Hartselle 12-4 in the fourth to wrap up the Class 6A, Area 14 win on Friday.
Brodie Banister and Jake Dorough scored 12 points apiece to lead Cullman. Both hit a pair of 3-pointers for Cullman. Sam Duskin added 7 in the win.
Kohl Key led Hartselle with 14 points. All four of his field goals came on 3-pointers. Rylan Smothers scored 9 and Brayden Thomas and Ty Odom added 8 apiece.
Florence 67, James Clemens 55
Jayshod Pearson scored 8 of his 16 points in a dominant third quarter for the Falcons in a home game on Saturday. The Falcons (15-9) trailed by 7 at the half before outscoring James Clemens 26-9 in the third period.
Bryant James scored 21 points for Florence.
The Falcons were 15-for-16 from the foul line in the second half. Pearson and James combined to go 10-for-10 in the fourth period.
Buckhorn 61, Hazel Green 49
The No. 1-ranked Class 6A Bucks (20-5) led 37-16 at the half on the way to the win on Friday.
Caleb Holt poured in 25 points for Buckhorn, playing in front of University of North Carolina assistant coach Jeff Lebo.
Madison Academy 72, St. John Paul II 36
The third-ranked Class 5A Mustangs improved to 23-4 on the season with the win on Friday.
Michael Stanford tossed in 19 points, hitting 8-of-10 field-goal attempts, with 3 assists and 3 steals.
Madison Academy travels to Scottsboro on Monday and hosts Bob Jones on Tuesday.
BIRMINGHAM
Provine (Miss.) 68, Huffman 58
The Rams from Jackson, Miss., earned the win at home on Saturday despite a big scoring performance from Huffman’s Peyton Wiggins.
The junior guard poured in 27 points for the Vikings in the losing effort. Kevon Walker scored 12 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Huffman (11-14).
Hoover 68, Tuscaloosa County 38
The seventh-ranked Bucs wrapped up Class 7A, Area 5 play with the rout at Tuscaloosa County on Friday. Hoover (22-3) finished 5-1 to win the area and will host the tournament.
Salim London led the Bucs with 18 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. DeWayne Brown scored 17 and Jarett Fairley scored 12 points and had 4 assists. Seneca Robinson finished with 5 assists and Austin Dudley grabbed 7 rebounds.
Hoover hosts Homewood on Monday for Senior Night.
Chelsea 59, Oak Mountain 51
The Hornets edged Oak Mountain on Friday on Senior Night for Chelsea.
Christen Whetstone led Chelsea with 16 points. Aiden Owens and Avery Futch scored 14 apiece in the win. Gavin Collett added 11.
Vestavia Hills 56, Thompson 52
The Rebels improved to 19-5 and 4-2 in Class 7A, Area 5 with the win over No. 5 Thompson on the road on Friday.
Jackson Weaver led Vestavia Hills with 20 points. Adam Barksdale scored 13 and Keown Richardson added 11.
Vestavia, ranked No. 9 in 7A, hosts Huffman on Monday.

The Patriots earned the win on Saturday over Haleyville in the 256 vs. 205 Challenge.
Armonie Franklin led Midfield, ranked third in Class 3A, with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Aaron Adams-Martin scored 17 and grabbed 6 rebounds. Doniven Wilson added 13 points in the win.

The Lions beat Calera on the road on Friday, improving to 15-11 on the season.
Drew Mears led Briarwood with 26 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds.

The Spartans improved to 20-6 on the year with the Class 6A, Area 10 home win on Friday.
Ty Davis led Mountain Brook with 16 points. He also had 3 assists. Jack Bakken scored 13 points and claimed 7 rebounds. Carson Romero added 10 points in the win.
Bessemer Academy 59, Monroe Academy 34
The Rebels ran their record to 19-1 on the year with the win over Monroe Academy.
Johnathan Winston scored 14 points and claimed 8 rebounds in the win. Garrison Manley scored 9 points while Jackson Rinehart had 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The Huskies improved to 20-5 on the season and 4-0 in Class 6A, Area 8 with the win.

The Jaguars earned the home win on Friday to improve to 15-12 on the year and 6-0 in Class 7A, Area 6.
T.J. Lamar led Spain Park with 9 points.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
McGill-Toolen 57, UMS-Wright 29
Andrew Murchison had 11 points and 10 rebounds and Jack Murphy scored 12 of his 22 points in the third quarter as Class 6A No. 4-ranked McGill-Toolen defeated UMS-Wright at home on Saturday.
The Yellow Jackets (21-5) have now won 10 straight.
McGill held a 33-15 halftime lead before a 20-3 third quarter broke open the game and gave the Jackets a 53-18 edge heading into the final quarter. In the third, Murphy hit three 3-pointers and the defense did the rest.
McGill jumped out to an early 16-7, first-quarter lead, which was sparked by 7 points from Zach Patrick. Murphy took over in the second with 8 points before the third-quarter fireworks.
The Jackets finish up the regular season with road trips to Theodore on Tuesday and Faith Academy on Thursday before hosting the 6A, Area 2 tournament.
Jack Blackerby led the Bulldogs (12-14) with 9 points.
On Friday, McGill-Toolen edged visiting Spanish Fort 48-45 as the Yellow Jackets held the Toros to 7 fourth-quarter points.
Junior Ethan Stokes scored 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for McGill-Toolen in the Class 6A, Area 2 win.
Down 46-45, Spanish Fort’s potential game-winning 3-pointer was off the mark, McGill’s Jack Murphy got the rebound and was fouled. He hit both free throws with 1.1 second left to seal the deal.
The Jackets, 6-0 in area play, trailed 38-33 heading into the fourth quarter, but Stokes – who was 10-of-12 from the field – hit two free throws to close within 40-37. Murchison’s layup with 5:24 pulled the Jackets to 40-39. Twenty seconds later, Grayson Brower’s steal and dunk gave McGill-Toolen a lead it didn’t relinquish.
McGill trailed after the first quarter 13-10, despite Stokes scoring the first 8 points for the home team. Murchison’s 6 second-quarter points got the Jackets back to even – 23-all – at halftime.
The Toros outscored the Jackets 15-10 in the third to set up the fourth-quarter rally.
Murphy finished with 10 points and Murchison added 8 for the Jackets.
Lucca Nelson led Spanish Fort (11-14, 2-4) with 14 points. Jacob Black added 13 points, and Josh Powell contributed 12 for the Toros.
Chickasaw 68, Clarke County 58
The Chieftains picked up the Class 2A, Area 1 win at home on Friday, jumping to a 24-8 first-quarter lead.
Forward Marvin Brooks poured in 16 points and hauled down 18 rebounds in the win. Jamarion Osborne scored 15 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and had 6 assists with 5 steals for Chickasaw (17-7, 6-2). Sydrus Gilmore led Chickasaw with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. He also had 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Javon Mose scored 12 points, 8 in the fourth period.
Chickasaw hosts Satsuma on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
Baker 60, Alma Bryant 21
Dashawn Thomas scored 17 points as Baker improved to 21-7 overall. Desmond Williams followed with 13 points, while Parrias Baker had 12.
The Hornets host Cottage Hill in the regular season finale on Thursday.
Theodore 50, Saraland 30
Houston Cunningham had 20 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals for the Bobcats (15-11).
JJ Bush added 10 points, 12 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocks and Walter Cobb had 5 blocked shots.
Theodore finished 6-0 in Class 6A, Area 1 play and will host the area tournament.
St. Paul’s 46, Faith Academy 44
Charlie Fuchs’ lay-up with 23 seconds left gave the Saints a victory over Faith Academy.
Sam Vincent made 1-of-2 free throws with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game for the Rams. Fuchs finished with 8 points. His only basket of the fourth quarter proved to be the game-winner.
“It was just a situation where the guys would drive and kick, spacing the floor,” St. Paul’s coach Brandon Garrett said. “Charlie did a good job of finding the opening down low.”
Faith Academy raced to a quick 11-2 lead early in the game. Javon Wilson’s 3-pointer at the buzzer cut the Faith lead to 23-20 at halftime.
“We missed some shots early on and did not execute well defensively, but we started trusting each other and some shots started falling in the second half,” Garrett said.
The Saints took their first lead of the game, 27-25, midway through the third quarter and led 37-33 after three quarters. The Saints did not trail in the fourth quarter.
“We needed this one. We’ve been in so many games, some close losses, most recently LeFlore by 5, so it was good to pull this one out,” Garrett said.
Christian McWilliams led the Saints with 13 points. The Saints (9-14) will host LeFlore on Monday.
Trent Sellers led all scorers with 17 for Faith Academy. Tank Spears added 9 points, and Cray Coley defensively had 2 blocks, 5 rebounds and 1 assist for Faith Academy.
“Every college scout needs to be down here looking at No. 4 (Spears),” Garrett said. “He’s a dynamic scorer, and we weren’t going to let him beat us,” said Garrett.
The Rams (7-19) will play at UMS-Wright on Monday.

Terrell Johnson scored 27 points as Vigor rebounded from a rare loss earlier in the week.

“Tonight was another tough area game for us,” coach Jairus Jackson said. “We used our defense to pull us through.”
Earlier in the week, Vigor lost to Davidson, 72-67.

Montgomery Academy clinched the Class 3A, Area 6 regular-season title with the win on Senior Night on Friday.
The home team scored 22 in the opening quarter to build an 8-point lead. MA was up by 9 at the half and by 10 headed into the final period.
Skyler Stovall led Montgomery Academy (19-7, 5-1) with 20 points and 13 rebounds. He also had 6 assists and 5 steals. DJ Vinson also had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Jarrett Friendly scored 8 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and had 3 assists. Graham Martin claimed 7 rebounds and Cole Caddell had 4 assists and 3 rebounds.

Bob Jones 48, James Clemens 32
Class 7A No. 1 Bob Jones whipped intracity rival James Clemens on Friday for its 16th straight win. The Patriots improved to 25-4 on the season with their regular season finale set for Friday at home against Grissom.
Alana Obianozie led Bob Jones with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Janiyah Bone scored 10 in the win.
Hazel Green 71, Buckhorn 36
The top-ranked Class 6A Trojans rolled over Buckhorn on Friday to improve to 23-4, 6-0 in Area 16.
Amiya Redus led Hazel Green with 22 points and 4 rebounds. Leah Brooks scored 16 points with 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Kristen Johnson scored 13 points.
Hazel Green will host Hoover for Senior Night on Tuesday before hosting the area tournament on Friday and Monday.

The Hawks took the home win on Saturday, led by Adily Alberti with 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals.

The Senators, ranked No. 2 in Class 7A, whipped Albertville on Friday to run their record to 18-7 overall and 5-0 in Area 7. Sparkman held Albertville to 4 points in the second half and for the second straight game the Senators had all 10 players in the rotation score.
Jamya Griffin led Sparkman with 12 points and Hannah Horton added 11.
Sand Rock 67, Coosa Christian 22
The Wildcats improved to 20-7 on the year with the home rout on Saturday.
Katelyn St.Clair led the winners with 21 points. Zoey Handy pitched in 13 for Sand Rock. Kennedy Henderson added 9.

Decatur Heritage 59, Pisgah 50
Class 2A, No. 3 Decatur Heritage rallied in the fourth period to knock off No. 10 Pisgah on the road on Friday. Pisgah led the back-and-forth contest 14-11 after one quarter while the visitors led 25-23 at the half. Pisgah was back on top 37-34 headed into the final quarter.
Katelyn Cooper led DHCA (22-3) with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Leslie Hames scored 9 in the win while Genie McGhee grabbed 10 rebounds to go with 9 assists, 8 points and 5 blocks.

The Knights (20-6) picked up the Marshall County Tournament title with the win on Saturday.

Teralyn Hill notched a double-double for Parkers (16-6) with 17 points, 13 rebounds, 3 steals and 2 blocked shots.
Savannah McDonald led Homewood (21-5, 4-2) with 12 points.
Parker (3-2 in area play) hosts Minor (4-1) on Tuesday. A win by the Thundering Herd would result in a three-way tie for the area title with Homewood and would mean a coin flip would decide the champion.

The Rockets improved to 13-10 on the year, 2-2 in Class 6A, Area 11 with the win on Friday.

The Rebels, ranked fourth in Class 7A, improved to 23-4 on the year with the Area 5 road win on Friday.

Second-ranked Class 5A Pleasant Grove improved to 18-7, 6-0 in Area 9 with the Friday win.
Tamya Smith led the Spartans with 17 points. She also had 8 rebounds. Keyarria Stokes finished with a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. London Williams scored 12 points with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Carlish Enge scored 10 in the win.
MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA
UMS-Wright 38, St. Michael 36
UMS-Wright capped a perfect record in Class 4A, Area 1 play with the win.
Junior Ansleigh Ishee scored 18 points as UMS improved to 21-6 overall and 6-0 in area play.
The Bulldogs led throughout but could never put St Michael away.
“Hats off to coach (David) Offerle and his staff,” UMS coach Terry Canova said. “This is my fourth time playing them in the past two seasons, and it’s a dogfight every time. They make you grind out every basket.
“I’m just really proud of my girls. They are winners. They refuse to go down easy. Tonight, we just found a way again.”
Senior Noel Freeman had 9 points and dominated the boards with 15 rebounds.
UMS-Wright hosts Faith Academy on Monday and plays at St. Paul’s on Wednesday.
St. Paul’s 56, Faith Academy 36
Clarissa Dupree led all scorers with 19 points, Fancy Malone added 14 points and Gianna Estrada 11 points for St. Paul’s.
The Saints used a 17-4 second quarter scoring advantage to lead 33-14 at halftime.
“We really settled in at the beginning of the second quarter,” St. Paul’s coach Kent Fullington said. “We led by 6 after the first quarter, but defensively we were able to apply some pressure and that turned into some big baskets for us.”
The Saints (17-5) host LeFlore on Monday.
Faith Academy was led by Nancy McKenzie with 17 points. Mya Pugh added 9 points for the Rams.
Faith Academy (6-14) will play at UMS-Wright on Monday.

Jackson 54, Escambia County 22
Erica Walton had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Aggies (23-2).
Tyra Caves chipped in 11 points and 2 assists.
Jackson plays at T.R. Miller on Monday and hosts Blount on Tuesday.
McGill-Toolen 56, Spanish Fort 36
The Yellow Jackets wrapped up Class 6A, Area 2 regular-season title – their fifth straight – with the home win on Friday. Ninth-ranked McGill-Toolen is 20-7 on the year and will close out the regular season at Theodore on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Albanie Dixon led the Jackets on Friday with 21 points. Makayla Johnson scored 11 in the win.
Ally Olson and Brooke Bourdeau led Spanish Fort with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Alma Bryant 81, Baker 42
Alma Bryant wrapped up the No. 2 seed in Class 7A, Area 1 with the home win on Friday.
Madi-Marie Grayson poured in 35 points to lead the Hurricanes. Mari-Margret Grayson scored 21 in the win and Kaylee Williamson added 13.
Alma Bryant (16-8, 3-2) will host Mary G. Montgomery on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Prattville Christian 66, BTW Magnet 14
The Panthers rolled to the Class 4A, Area 5 home win on Saturday giving the No. 1-ranked squad a 21-5 record for the season. Prattville Christian finished area play at 6-0.
Kayden Carr led PCA with 21 points, 10 steals and 6 rebounds – all in the first half. Avery Rogers scored 14 points and had 7 steals and 5 rebounds for Prattville Christian. Ally Blankinchip scored 11 points with 4 assists and 4 steals. Baylee Rogers had 5 assists and 5 steals and Leah Cate Wilson grabbed 7 rebounds.
The Panthers travel to Montgomery Academy on Monday.
On Friday, Prattville Christian beat Wilcox Central 54-42 on the road to win the regular-season Class 4A, Area 5 title. Carr poured in 21 points and grabbed 20 rebounds for the winners.
Rogers had 15 points with 6 rebounds and Blankinchip had 14 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds and 5 steals. Wilson finished with 9 rebounds.
Andalusia 39, Georgiana 28
The Bulldogs topped Georgiana on Saturday in the Tri-County Showcase at Andalusia.
Lillie Boggan led Georgiana (12-9) with 15 points.
Georgiana 64, J.F. Shields 50
Georgiana knocked off visiting J.F. Shields on Friday, led by Lillie Boggan’s double-double performance. Boggan scored 23 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and had 5 assists.
Nyeashia Thomas scored 18 in the win and Tarnasia McMeans added 10 for Georgiana (12-8, 7-1 in Class 1A, Area 3).
