Alabama Democrats link Holocaust to Kenneth Smith execution
The Alabama Democratic Party was critical Saturday of a tweet from Gov. Kay Ivey recognizing International Holocaust Remembrance Day on the heels of the state using nitrogen gas to execute Kenneth Eugene Smith.
“Today, we remember the millions of lives lost to unfathomable hatred — mindful that antisemitism still tries to resurface in our world. To never again see such evil carry out, we will always continue to preserve the memory of this painful history,” Ivey wrote in the post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
About four hours after Ivey’s tweet, the official Alabama Democrats’ X account responded with the following:
“A man was gassed to death for 22 minutes Thursday with your permission but yes, tell us more about ‘never again seeing such evil carried out.’”
While some commenters had a similar response, others condemned the Democrats’ response.
In late 2023, the Alabama Democratic Party was admonished by the Anti-Defamation League’s office in Atlanta for a social media post likening Sen. Tommy Tuberville’s views on the military to Adolf Hitler.
The party was responding to an anti-Tuberville ad that included a clip of Alabama’s senior senator criticizing the American military as weak and that “all this wokeness” is “infiltrating our military.”
