North Alabama school resource officer jailed for allegedly having sexual contact with student

A school resource officer in north Alabama was arrested Friday afternoon after authorities said he had sexual contact with a student.

Jairo Alexander Castillo, 32, of Collinsville, worked as an SRO through the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office, the agency said. The sheriff’s office did not say which school Castillo worked at, but identified him as a “former officer.”

The sheriff’s office and the DeKalb County Board of Education received complaints about Castillo and turned over the investigation to the State Bureau of Investigation, as is standard when a sheriff’s office employee is being probed.

Following the investigation, Castilla was charged with two counts of having sexual contact with a student, the sheriff’s office said.

He is being held in the DeKalb County Detention Center on $300,000 bond.

“It’s unfortunate that something like this has happened in our own community and it is definitely a black eye in many ways for us all. I believe in facing things whether good or bad head on and not sugar coating anything or being bias to anyone,” said DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Welden in a statement.

“I hoped and prayed these allegations were unfounded but according to the investigation, evidence proves otherwise and now it’s time to deal with it head on,” the sheriff said. “No one person is better than the other and we strive on fairness and that is exactly how this case with be handled, period.”
