Reports: South Alabama DC could be headed to MIssouri

South Alabama defensive coordinator Corey Batoon appears to be headed to Missouri, according to multiple reports. AL.com has since confirmed the news.

The 55-year-old Batoon has been the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator and safeties coach since 2021, when he joined Kane Wommack’s original staff. He was expected to be retained in the same role under new head coach Major Applewhite, but now is reportedly headed to the SEC.

ESPN and 247 Sports both reported that a deal is imminent, though PowerMizzou.com of the Rivals network reported it is not yet done. Batoon would replace former Missouri defensive coordinator Blake Baker, who was hired earlier this month by LSU.

South Alabama ranked 15th nationally in total defense in 2023, allowing just 313.2 yards per game. The Jaguars were also in the Top 30 in the country in scoring defense (tied for 26th), rushing defense (19th), passing defense (28th), red zone defense (23rd) and third-down defense (27th).

A Hawaii native, Batoon previously coached alongside Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz when both were assistants under Hugh Freeze at Arkansas State in 2011. Batoon has also worked at Montana, Northern Arizona, Ole Miss, Florida Atlantic, Hawaii and Liberty in a 30-plus-year coaching career.
