Man allegedly threatened mass shooting âwith a smile onâ after Upsidedown Plaza kicked him out
A Gardendale man has been arrested after authorities said he made threats on social media to shoot up a bar on Birmingham’s Southside.
Deandre Javontay Jones, 27, is charged with making a terrorist threat. He remains held in the Jefferson County Jail on $15,000 bond.
Birmingham’s South Precinct officers responded about 7:30 p.m. Saturday to the Upsidedown Plaza on Magnolia Avenue after receiving reports that someone was threatening a shooting at the bar.
Officers learned that a patron – later identified as Jones – had been kicked out of the bar days earlier and made threats to come back and carry out a shooting.
Those threats were made on Facebook, and shared multiple times on other social media sites.
“Today I called off work for 4 days because I think I want to do something that will make people band together after I’m done,’’ the suspect is alleged to have written. “What if I do some like some of these white kids be doing y’all and just commit a mass massac** of people at plaza.”
He went on to write that he would take his own life “with a smile on my face” when police responded.
“I love the world so much that I’m willing to sacrifice myself and as many people as I need to make sure this world can be a better one,’’ the suspect wrote. “I’ll help make a world that doesn’t pass judgment on others but only within themselves.”
Officer Truman Fitzgerald said officers preserved the social media posts and launched an investigation.
A warrant was issued for Jones on Monday.
On Wednesday, BPD’s Crime Reduction Team took him into custody.
“We’re thankful for the business for reaching out to us and not taking this threat lightly as well as community for their response to the threat,’’ Fitzgerald said. “I think the Birmingham Police Department speaks for all law enforcement agencies when we say we’re not going to take threats like that lightly.”
