Woman convicted in deadly 2022 domestic shooting of Birmingham man

A woman has been convicted in a 2022 fatal domestic shooting of a man at a Birmingham home.

A Jefferson County jury on Thursday convicted Talana Wakesia Cherry, 45, of murder. Killed in the shooting was 34-year-old Rodriquez “Pete” Amison.

The trial began Monday before Jefferson County Circuit Judge Stephen Wallace.

Officers were dispatched at 5 p.m. that Saturday, July 16, 2022, to the 200 block of 52nd Street on a report of a person shot. When they arrived, they found the victim unresponsive in a residence.

Amison was pronounced dead on the scene by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

Police said the shooting stemmed from an argument.

Amison was a 2008 graduate of George W. Carver high School and a member of Church of the Highlands in Woodlawn, according to his obituary.

“He loved the Lord and he loved people. He never met a stranger and never said, ‘no’, no matter what the situation,’’ his obituary read. “He enjoyed being with family and friends. Also, he loved his Alabama Football (Roll Tide).”

Cherry was taken into custody at the scene and held in the Birmingham City Jail until formal warrants were obtained. She was then held in the Jefferson County Jail until she was released on bond in October 2023.

A sentencing date has not yet been announced.
