‘Texas, you can count on Alabama,’ Ivey tells Greg Abbott in Biden razor wire border dispute

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey on Thursday offered her support to her Texas counterpart in that state’s ongoing dispute with the Biden demonstration over immigration enforcement.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday issued a statement insisting his state has the right to defend itself from what he called record-smashing levels of illegal immigration, The Dallas Morning News reported.

Texas has installed rows of razor wire and says more is being added after the Supreme Court cleared the way for Border Patrol agents to cut or remove the sharp metal barrier. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday allowed Border Patrol agents to resume cutting the razor wire.

“James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and the other visionaries who wrote the U.S. Constitution foresaw that States should not be left to the mercy of a lawless president who does nothing to stop external threats like cartels smuggling millions of illegal immigrants across the border,” Abbott wrote in a statement made public Wednesday.

Abbott’s statement accused President Joe Biden’s administration of breaking “the compact” between the federal government and individual states by failing to enforce federal immigration laws. It also stated Biden’s failure “triggered” Texas’ “constitutional right to self-defense.”

Ivey on Thursday offered support for Abbott.

“Texas and the states have stepped up time and time again. The White House? Purposely absent. I have had enough,” Ivey posted on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

“Texas, you can count on Alabama to have your back,” Ivey wrote.

It was not clear, however, what steps Ivey’s administration would take, if any, to back Abbott.
