Woman struck, killed when she got out of disabled vehicle among 3 dead following Jeffco traffic crashes
Three people died over the weekend following Jefferson County traffic crashes, including a woman who was struck on Elton B. Stephens Expressway after she got out of her disabled vehicle.
Procha Patrice Williams , 34, was struck at 2:28 a.m. Sunday on Elton B. Stephens Expressway northbound at the U.S. 31 exit ramp, according to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office.
Williams was the driver of a vehicle that became disabled in one of the traffic lanes, said Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates. She got out of her vehicle and was struck by another vehicle.
She was pronounced dead on the scene at 3:02 a.m.
Birmingham police are investigating.
Jose Rodolfo Cruz Vargas, 25, died Saturday night in a fiery crash on Interstate 459 in Hoover.
Hoover police and firefighters responded at 11 p.m. to a report of a wreck on Interstate 459 southbound near mile marker 11. That location is a mile north of the Highway 150 exit.
Officers arrived to find a Ford F-150 engulfed in flames with the driver trapped inside, said police Capt. Keith Czeskleba.
Cruz, of Pelham, was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:07 p.m.
Czeskleba said it appears the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it left the road, hit a tree and caught fire. No one else was in the truck.
Demarius Deshun Williams, 22, died Saturday following a New Year’s Eve crash in Birmingham.
The wreck happened at 11:44 p.m. on Dec. 31 on Brighton Road at Daniel Drive. Multiple vehicles were involved.
Williams was taken to UAB Hospital where he died at 3:49 a.m. Saturday.
Details surrounding the wreck have not been released.
