JD Crowe: Alabama clowns around with nitrogen hypoxia execution. What could go wrong?

This is an opinion cartoon.

So, let’s get this straight. Alabama, the ‘Botched Executions R Us’ state, will be the first to attempt nitrogen hypoxia, a new execution method. On a guy, Kenneth Smith, who has already survived one botched execution attempt. Lordy. The world will be watching with popcorn. What could go wrong?

Smith is guilty as hell of murder, by all accounts. But that’s no reason to be clowning around with his execution.

Hopefully, Gov. “Grim Reaper” Kay Ivey, the MAGA Supreme Court or someone will come to their senses and stop this madness before Mr. Smith is used as a guinea pig again. For a pro-life state, Alabama loves to lick its chops when it comes to doling out unpredictably cruel and unusual death. But this state, it has been proven time and time again, can’t kill people without screwing up.

It’s time for an execution, alright. The death penalty should be executed. Let the guilty die in prison. That’s a cheaper solution for taxpayers, and a harsher sentence for the truly guilty.
