50 most common last names in America
Nothing represents the melting pot of America better than the tapestry created by its surnames.
Surnames, or family names or last names, reflect people’s heritage and can provide a glimpse into their history as well. There’s also an incredible variety of last names in the U.S. – at least 150,000 different ones, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
According to an analysis by Viborc.com, the three most common surnames overall in the U.S. are Smith, Johnson and Williams. Smith is the most popular among white Americans while Williams comes in at number one for African Americans. Nguyen is the most popular Asian-American last name; Garcia tops the list of most common Hispanic last names.
Viborc also used data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Decennial Census Survey to rank the top 200 surnames in the U.S. The top 50 are below and you can see the rest of the list here. The number after the name reflects the total number of times that last name appears in the U.S.
