Man wanted for murder of mother of four in Georgia arrested at Florida Publix

A man charged with murdering a woman in Georgia was arrested last week in the parking lot of a Publix in Crestview, Fla., according to the Okaloosa County (Fla.) Sheriff’s Office.

Charles Franklin Cook, 44, of Marietta, Ga., was arrested after investigators from Cobb County, Ga., notified the OCSO that Cook was possibly in the Crestview area.

Deputies located Cook in his vehicle in the store parking lot and took him into custody.

According to the Cobb County Police Department, Cook is charged with killing 44-year-old Melinda Jolly of Marietta, who was found dead in her home during a welfare check by her brother, Tommy Jolly, on Jan. 17, according to a GoFundMe page set up by Jolly’s family.

The manner of death has not been released. Cook and Jolly were in a relationship, but not married, according to Aaron Wilson, Public Information Officer for Cobb County police.

Jolly was a mother of four who had moved to Georgia from California in 2019 after her husband died from cancer, according to WSB-TV in Atlanta. Her children were put in the care of their aunt and uncle after Jolly’s death.

Jolly’s family described the relationship between her and Cook as “abusive” and called Cook a “monster.”

Last October, Cook was arrested and charged with two counts of child cruelty after Cobb County police had to break in to a vehicle outside the same home where Jolly was murdered to remove a 4-year-old child who was locked inside a hot vehicle, according to Fox5 in Atlanta.

The report described Cook as “the boyfriend of the child’s mother,” although Jolly was not mentioned by name.

Cook was also arrested in Spartanburg, S.C., in July 2021 and charged with assault and battery. The arrest was made by the campus police at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, according to court records.

The disposition of that case and the child cruelty case were not immediately available.

As of Monday, Cook remained in the Okaloosa County Jail awaiting an extradition hearing.
