Man dies from injuries suffered in Blount County crash last weekend

An Altoona man has died from injuries sustained in a crash last weekend in Blount County near Oneonta, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).

The accident occurred last Sunday on Blount County 29 near Rainbow Drive, about four miles south of Oneonta, just after 4 p.m. when a 2009 Toyota Camry driven by 36-year-old Joel M. Hicks left the roadway and overturned.

Neither Hicks nor his passenger, 62-year-old Rita H. Quarles of Oneonta, were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash and both were ejected from the vehicle.

Hicks and Quarles were both transported to the University of Alabama-Birmingham Hospital for treatment. Hicks eventually succumbed to his injuries.

No other details were available. The accident remains under investigation, according to ALEA.
