NFL Playoffs Week 2: Alabama representation dwindles

NFL Playoffs Week 2: Alabama representation dwindles

The NFL’s Super Wild-Card Weekend was not super for most of the former Alabama players participating in it.

During the 2023 regular season, 72 former Crimson Tide players got on the field, the most from one college program in one season in NFL history.

The Alabama alumni followed that by producing the most players on the active rosters of the 14 postseason teams with 28.

But after the six games of the Super Wild-Card Weekend, there are nine former Tide players on the active rosters of the eight teams remaining in the Super Bowl LVIII tournament.

On active rosters, Alabama has five former players on the Houston Texans, three on the Detroit Lions and one on the Baltimore Ravens. Houston and Baltimore play on Saturday in the first of four games during the Divisional Weekend.

Six college programs have more of their players on postseason active rosters now than Alabama, with Penn State’s 13 leading the way. There are 12 players apiece from Florida, Georgia and Iowa and 10 each from Michigan and Ohio State.

When the playoffs started, only LSU was guaranteed of getting an alumnus to Super Bowl LVIII. The Tigers had at least one former player on the active rosters of all seven AFC playoff teams. With the field reduced to four teams on each side of the bracket, Iowa, Penn State and Texas have joined LSU as college programs assured of Super Bowl LVIII representation.

No college program is as yet assured of having a winning player in Super Bowl LVIII.

Fourteen of the past 15 Super Bowls have featured at least one former Alabama player on the field. The exception was Super Bowl LV, when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9 on Feb. 7, 2021. Former Tide tight end O.J. Howard was on injured reserve and couldn’t play for the Bucs.

Auburn has five former players on the active rosters of the playoff teams, down from eight when the postseason started. The Tigers have three former players on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and two on the Green Bay Packers. Jacksonville State, Samford and South Alabama still have one former player apiece alive.

Every SEC team has at least three former players remaining in the postseason as the conference has a total of 85 – 20 percent of the active-roster slots.

The postseason active rosters also include 12 former Alabama high school stars.
