Alabama football landed a transfer portal pickup, the first one of the Kalen DeBoer era in Tuscaloosa. Freshman quarterback Austin Mack committed to Alabama from DeBoer’s previous school, Washington, on Thursday

Mack shared the news to his social media after it was first reported by On3 Sports.

He reclassified from the recruiting class of 2024 to join the Huskies last season. He did not play in 2023, preserving his redshirt, and will have four seasons of eligibility with the Crimson Tide.

The 6-foot-6, 226-pound Mack was a four-star prospect coming out of Folsom High in California. He was ranked as the No. 16 quarterback in the class of 2023.

Similarly to Alabama players following Nick Saban’s retirement, the Huskies received an extra 30-day window to enter the transfer portal after DeBoer left to take the Alabama job. UA has seen some significant portal losses since the window opened, including safety Caleb Downs and offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor.

Mack led Folsom the California state semifinals in his final season of high school football. He threw for 3,498 yards and 40 touchdowns, on his way to being named the Sacramento Bee’s large school player of the year.

After entering the transfer portal Sunday, Mack was ranked as a four-star transfer prospect by 247 Sports. He’ll join a quarterback room that will include holdovers from last season, including Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson, with 2024 five-star signee Julian Sayin not having made any indication whether or not he plans to stay in Tuscaloosa under the new staff.
