Alabama early enrollee Jameer Grimsley enters transfer portal

Alabama football saw another player enter the transfer portal on Thursday. Jameer Grimsley, a 2024 signee and early enrollee put his name in, according to a report from 247Sports.

Grimsley later shared the news of his portal entry to his own social media.

Grimsley was a four-star prospect in the class of 2024. He finalized his letter of intent during the early signing period and joined Alabama for its trip to the College Football Playoff’s Rose Bowl semifinal.

He became one of a flurry of Alabama players to enter the portal after Nick Saban’s Wednesday retirement and Kalen DeBoer’s hiring as the Crimson Tide’s head coach. UA players got an extra 30-day entry window due to the turnover.

The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Grimsley came to Alabama from Tampa Catholic in Florida. He was the No. 17 cornerback in his class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

He originally chose Alabama over offers from Florida State, Penn State and Michigan among others.

Grimsley had appeared both in practice and on the sidelines of the Rose Bowl, one of several members of the class of 2024 to join up early. The group was obviously not allowed to participate in the game, but could practice.

Alabama athletics director Greg Byrne discussed key players leaving via the portal following Saban’s retirement on the Paul Finebaum Show Wednesday. He said he disliked seeing it happen, and emphasized the perks of being an athlete at Alabama.

“Alabama is such a special place,” Byrne said. “The investment that we make in our young men and young women across the board for our sports, and what we do from an academic support (standpoint), medical support, mental health, nutrition, across the board is as good as any place in the country.”
