Winter weather advisory issued for parts of Alabama, Tennessee

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory through Friday morning in anticipation of freezing rain as another burst of arctic air settles over Alabama.

The advisory begins at noon through 6 a.m. Friday.

According to the weather service, total ice accumulations of up to 0.05 inches are possible for portions of north central, northeast and northwest Alabama and southern middle Tennessee.

The advisory affects Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan and Jackson counties.

Conditions could make for very slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges. The hazardous conditions will likely impact the evening commute. That’s bad news for parts of the state that are still dealing with icy roads as overnight temperatures once again dipped below freezing.

Some school systems are opting to stay closed through Friday, while others are planning for virtual school.

Drivers are advised to slow down and use caution while traveling.

Homeowners should prepare for possible power outages.
