Mobile’s downtown airport to get new airline connection

Mobile’s downtown airport, facing a suspension of service from its lone commercial carrier, will announce a new connection next week.

Mobile International Airport currently consists of a small terminal at the Brookley Aeroplex. Built to attract low-cost carriers to the site near downtown Mobile, it’s something of a stepping stone to the construction of a full new international airport terminal at Brookley, which will allow all commercial passenger service to be switched to Brookley from the regional airport in west Mobile.

Maintaining regular service from the current Brookley site has been a challenge: Frontier Airlines provided connections to Denver and Chicago starting in 2019, but suspended service in early 2020. Avelo Airlines began service to Orlando in May 2023 but announced in December that it planned to begin what it called a seasonal suspension in March. (Avelo does have flights currently listed for January, February and early March.)

The Mobile Airport Authority said on Thursday that it will announce a new carrier Tuesday morning, and that a representative of the as-yet-unnamed carrier will reveal what destination its flights will serve.

The planned new terminal is currently slated to open in November 2025. The most recent estimate of the project’s cost is $381 million.
