Tennessee representative calls Mike Rogers a ‘redneck’ after altercation
A fellow congressman from Tennessee called Alabama’s U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers a “redneck” and accused Rogers of drinking on the House floor after a brief altercation, according to reports.
Rogers was briefly restrained as he approached Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida during the contentious 14th vote for U.S. House speaker Friday night. Rogers has supported Rep. Kevin McCarthy, who won the position on a 15th vote, while Gaetz and a handful of hardliners had repeatedly blocked McCarthy’s nomination.
Rogers later downplayed the incident, calling it a “nothing burger.”
But that hasn’t stopped other lawmakers from weighing in.
Rep. Tim Burchett of Tennessee, who was sitting next to Gaetz, said Rogers was making threats about ending careers during the altercation, according to CNN reporter Kate Sullivan.
Burchett also accused Rogers of drinking during the congressional voting, according to tweets from Sullivan.
“People shouldn’t be drinking, especially when you’re a redneck, on the House floor,” Burchett said.
AL.com has reached out to Rogers’ office for comment about these remarks.
Sullivan reported Burchett said “I would drop [Rogers] like a bag of dirt,” and that “nobody’s gonna put their hands on me. Nobody’s gonna threaten me.”
Burchett has not clarified his remarks, but did release a statement Friday congratulating McCarthy and calling the process an “honest debate that shows we will be a very deliberative body under his leadership.”
For his part, Rogers tweeted this weekend that he was excited to work with McCarthy. “Now it is time for the House to do the work the American people sent us to do.”
