Mail isn’t running so I didn’t get my utility bill: What happens next?

Days of iced-over roads mean mail service has been disrupted for much of North Alabama.

But what if the mail you missed included your utility bill? Will you be charged a late fee or, even worse, have your service cut off?

No, according to Huntsville Utilities.

Huntsville Utilities will not interrupt service for non-payment until “temperatures moderate,” the utility said in a statement.

“We also realize that the suspension of local mail service means some customers will not receive their bills in a timely manner. While the details are still being discussed, customers affected will not be charged fees for late payment,” HU said.

The U.S. Post Office does not currently have any parts of Alabama listed as experiencing service disruption but treacherous travel has prevented most mail delivery for this week. Temperatures in North Alabama are expected to rise above freezing later today but light rain is also predicted. The rain, combined with another drop in temperatures, will contribute to the hazardous weather conditions and continued travel problems.
