How to file your taxes for free

How to file your taxes for free

The Internal Revenue Service won’t start accepting and processing individual tax returns until Jan. 29. That doesn’t mean you have to wait until then to prepare your returns and, for millions of Americans, that process can be free.

IRS Free File Guided Tax Software is now live.

“Taxpayers will always have choices for how they file their taxes. They can file using tax software, a trusted tax professional, Free File, or free tax preparation services through IRS partners,” IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement. “Through the years, Free File has helped millions of taxpayers, and it remains an important option for people to consider using to quickly and easily file their taxes.”

Free File is offered via a public/private partnership between the IRS and Free File Inc., a group of eight private-sector companies that provide online guided tax software. It is available to any taxpayer with an Adjusted Gross Income of $79,000 or less in 2023. Those with AGI of more than $79,000 can use the IRS’s Free File Fillable Forms though the IRS cautions its best for people “comfortable using IRS form instructions and publications when preparing their own taxes.”

Also, Each IRS Free File provider may have eligibility rules for products based on age, income and state residency.

Free File providers will accept the completed tax returns and then hold them until they can be filed on Jan. 29.
