3 people killed when power line falls onto car in Portland, 2-year-old injured

Three people died and a 2-year-old was injured Wednesday morning after a power line fell onto a car in Northeast Portland.

Firefighters responded to reports of the downed line in the 12300 block of Northeast Siskiyou Street around 11:45 a.m., Portland Fire and Rescue spokesperson Rick Graves said. They found three people and a child on the ground outside of a car when they arrived.

A fallen branch collided with a powerline and sent it down onto the vehicle, Graves said. Officials suspect that the people were frightened and attempted to leave the car, stepping out onto the wet ground that was affected by the live current.

Two adults and one teenager were found dead at the scene. A 2-year-old was taken to the hospital and seems to be in stable condition, Graves said.

Graves warned that people should never go near downed wires. If a powerline comes down on a vehicle, he said occupants should stay inside and call 911 unless there is “imminent danger.” The car’s rubber tires will block the current.

“In all likelihood, had they stayed in the vehicle, we might not have been having this conversation,” Graves said.
