Demand hit all-time high, TVA comments on power grid stability

Power demand hit an all-time Tennessee Valley Administration record Wednesday morning, according to utility officials.

Peak power demand was 34,526 megawatts at a system average temperature of 4 degrees. The previous record was 33,482 MW in August 2007.

The extremely cold temperatures across the region continue to drive up demand but the electric grid is stable and generating facilities are performing well, according to TVA.

Customers are asked to voluntarily curtail energy usage as temperatures are expected to remain below freezing well into Thursday. TVA suggests:

  • Close curtains and blinds during the day.
  • Wash clothes in cold water, using a high spin cycle
  • Turn off lights when you can
  • Run the dishwasher only when it’s full
  • Turn off water when it’s not in use

In the long, term, TVA urges people to:

  • Replace the HVAC air filter every month
  • Pull the refrigerator away from the wall to help air properly circulate
  • Weatherstrip leaky doors and windows
  • Adjust the water heater temp to 120 F.
  • Reset refrigerator temperature to 35-38F and the freezer to )-5F.
  • Install a smart power strip. This will allow the power to cut off when a device is in standby mode.
