Curtail energy use, utility urges as freezing temps continue

Amid another day of below-freezing temperatures and high electric demand, the Tennessee Valley Authority is asking people to voluntarily limit their energy use.

Customers are asked to reduce consumption by turning off unneeded lights and not using major appliances like ovens, washing machines, washers/dryers, etc. during periods of extreme cold. Officials said they expect records for power demand could be reached Wednesday morning.

“Our generating plants and transmission system are performing well. As the snow and bitterly cold temperatures move through the Valley, we could set an all-time record for power demand Wednesday morning,” said a post from TVA.

To help conserve, people are asked to:

  • Reset the thermostat to 68 degrees
  • Close curtains and blinds to block out the cold
  • Reduce usage of nonessential appliances and lights
  • Seal any airway leaks from doors or windows

In 2022, increased energy demand amid freezing temperatures led to mandatory rolling blackouts in some parts of the TVA service area. The company has since announced several measures to prevent blackouts in the future.
