Schools close, go virtual on Wednesday, Jan. 17 due to ice, snow and road closures

Parts of Alabama could see the coldest temperatures in “decades” tonight and into Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow and freezing rain was over for north and parts of central Alabama as of Tuesday morning, but freezing rain was still falling in parts of south Alabama, where winter weather advisories were still in effect.

The vast majority of schools are closed Tuesday, and some schools have already announced they’ll be closed, have a delayed start or will do virtual learning on Wednesday.

The schools and districts below have announced they will close, delay the start of school or go to virtual learning on Wednesday:

Alabama School of Cyber Technology and Engineering – Closed Tuesday and Wednesday.

Baldwin County Schools – Schools starts at 10 a.m. on Wednesday.

Blount County Schools – Two-hour delayed start Wednesday.

Boaz City Schools – Two-hour delayed start Wednesday.

Choctaw County Schools – Virtual Wednesday.

Colbert County Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Florence City Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Franklin County Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Jasper City Schools – Schools starts at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Limestone County Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Morgan County Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Muscle Shoals City Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Northwest Shoals Community College – Remote learning Wednesday.

Randolph County Schools – Virtual learning Wednesday.

Roanoke City Schools – Virtual learning Wednesday.

Russellville City Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Sheffield City Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Tuscumbia City Schools – Closed Wednesday.

Walker County Schools – Two-hour delayed start Wednesday.
