Birmingham Candy Co. closing Pizitz Food Hall location

After nearly four years, the Birmingham Candy Co. has announced it has closed its Pizitz Food Hall location.

Husband and wife team Wayne and Cassie Bolden opened the downtown Birmingham location in April 2019.

In an Instagram post, the company said it was consolidating some aspects of the business “due to the current economic climate.”

“We did our best in 2023 to weather the storm and keep everything running to the best of our ability,” the company announced.

“We are, however, continuing to keep our Crestline location going. Birmingham Candy IS NOT going away entirely. We’re continuing to fight for the betterment of ourselves and our community.“

The two met by chance when they were both living in Savannah, Ga. Cassie, a Hoover native, was then a senior at Savannah College of Art and Design, and met Wayne at a Halloween party.

Wayne worked for 10 years in a candy store, eventually becoming the main confectioner and running his own store.

The two began a candy store in 2015, selling sweet treats at pop-up shops around Birmingham at Pepper Place Market, and at temporary stores like The Summit’s annual Christmas Village.

According to the couple, its Crestline location can expand into other revenue streams beyond retail.

“The sky is the limit here, and we’re dreaming big,” the post stated. “We want to assure you that our recently launched concept, Candy Bar Club, will not be affected by this store closure.

“It’s been a wild ride, and we’ll never forget this key marker in our company’s journey. It’s been an absolute pleasure to serve the downtown Birmingham community these past 5 years,” the couple said in the company’s post.
