Alabama faces up to 5 inches of snow as dangerously cold weather lingers in winter storm
Winter storm warnings have been issued for parts of north and west Alabama, which could get up to 5 inches of snow starting tonight and lasting into Tuesday.
Ice or a wintry mix will be possible farther south into parts of central and even southwest Alabama through Tuesday afternoon as well.
Then there is the cold.
Some spots in Alabama may not make it above freezing for a while, which could allow whatever frozen precipitation that falls to hang around for a while.
The National Weather Service is also warning all Alabamians of dangerously cold conditions this week, with lows bottoming out in the single digits and teens and wind chills even lower through Wednesday night.
The coldest night could be Tuesday into Wednesday, when lows in the single digits will be possible in north Alabama.
Lows in the teens will be possible all the way into south Alabama.
Forecasters think 1 to 5 inches of snow or a snow and ice mix will be possible across northern Alabama.
Locations farther south could get a wintry mix of snow and ice.
Some freezing rain or sleet will also be possible for parts of southwest Alabama.
Even a little ice or snow could make roads slippery with temperatures expected to be near or below freezing for the northern part of the state for an extended period.
Here’s a look at what’s expected by region:
NORTH ALABAMA
All of north Alabama will be under a winter storm warning or winter weather advisory starting tonight.
The National Weather Service in Huntsville noted that adjustments to the warnings may be possible.

Freezing rain and/or ice will possible over southeast portions of the forecast area where a warm layer of air may exist above freezing surface temperatures, the weather service said.
The weather service said there is a high probability of impacts from winter precipitation over northwest and north Alabama north of the Tennessee River.
Forecasters area also warning of bitterly cold temperatures through Wednesday night.
A winter storm warning will be in effect from 12 a.m. Monday until 6 a.m. Tuesday for Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison and Jackson counties.

CENTRAL ALABAMA
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said wintry precipitation will be possible as soon as tonight in the northwest part of central Alabama and is expected to spread southward. Precipitation should end by Tuesday morning.
A wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain will be possible in northwest central Alabama. Light amounts of sleep or freezing rain will be possible in other areas to the south and east.
There will be the potential for slick roads, with the most hazardous travel expected in the northwest.
A winter storm warning will be in effect for Marion and Winston counties from 6 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. Tuesday.
The National Weather Service in Birmingham said total snow accumulations of 2 inches and ice accumulations of about a tenth of an inch will be possible.

SOUTH ALABAMA
There are no winter weather advisories for south Alabama as of Sunday morning, but the National Weather Service in Mobile said light freezing rain will be possible for parts of interior southwest Alabama starting Monday night.
Forecasters said confidence was increasing that a light freezing rain event will affect parts of southwest Alabama (west of Interstate 65) late Monday night into Tuesday morning.
Light ice accumulations of less than a tenth of an inch appeared increasingly possible over these areas, especially in far northwestern portions of the region.
Forecasters warned that slick roads, bridges and overpasses will be possible.
