Theatergoers in Birmingham are looking forward to a blockbuster start to 2023. A national touring production of “Hamilton” will arrive on Jan. 24 (finally)! We’ll have 16 chances to see the Tony-winning show, which caused a sensation on Broadway and catapulted creator Lin-Manuel Miranda to stardom.

Other famous musicals will be presented here over the next few months, as well, in smaller productions from local companies. Alabama talent will be much on display in these shows, which range from a classic Broadway stepper to a Parrothead’s delight.

Here are five musicals that caught our eye, scheduled now through mid-April in Birmingham.

“HAMILTON”

What: National touring production of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winning musical, presented by the American Theatre Guild as part of the Broadway in Birmingham series. “Hamilton” is based on Ron Chernow’s biography of the founding father. Miranda’s score fuses hip-hop with R&B, pop, soul and styles of traditional show tunes. The musical debuted on Broadway in 2015 and continues to run at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. A movie version of “Hamilton” is streaming on Disney+.
