Former Alabama safety Jake Pope transferring to SEC rival

Former Alabama safety Jake Pope is transferring to Georgia, he announced on Friday evening.

Pope, a Buford, Ga., native, appeared in 11 games mostly on special teams as a redshirt freshman in 2023. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Pope, a four-star recruit in Alabama’s 2022 signing class, is one of three Crimson Tide defensive backs to transfer away since the end of the season. Safety Kristian Story transferred to Kentucky, while cornerback Earl Little is headed to Florida State.

Several other Alabama players at other positions have also entered the transfer portal, with star wide receiver Isaiah Bond becoming the latest on Friday. Also having decided on transfer destinations are center Seth McLaughlin (Ohio State), quarterback Eli Holstein (Pittsburgh), defensive lineman Monkell Goodwin (South Carolina) and offensive lineman Terrance Ferguson (Florida State).

The NCAA transfer portal closed last week, but re-opened for 30 days just for Alabama players following Nick Saban’s retirement announcement on Wednesday.
