South Alabama on Friday announced the addition of former Liberty linebacker Aakil Washington to its 2024 roster.

Washington (6-foot-2, 245 pounds) left the Flames after four games in 2023 to redshirt and retain his final season of eligibility. In 34 games at Liberty over the last four years, the Marietta, Ga., native totaled 83 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, three pass breakups and one forced fumble.

Washington fills a position of need for South Alabama, which lost top edge rusher Quinton Wilfawn to graduation after the 2023 season. Wilfawn led the Jaguars with 84 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks and six quarterback hurries this past season.

Washington is the sixth Division I transfer to join the Jaguars since the end of the regular season, along with offensive lineman Malachi Preciado (Purdue), tight end Andrew Bench (Bowling Green), defensive lineman Bryston Dixon (Georgia Tech), cornerback Lardarius Webb Jr. (Oklahoma State) and kicker Laith Marjan (East Carolina). South Alabama also signed junior-college cornerback Jordan Scruggs, who was not required to sign in December because he had previously spent time at a Division II school.
