Birmingham’s Star Amphitheater construction begins this spring, possibly opening summer 2025

Construction work to prepare the site of the 9,000-seat Star Amphitheater in Birmingham’s Uptown entertainment district north of Protective Stadium will get underway this spring, and the music venue is on track to open next summer.

“It’s falling in line right about where we expected it to, in terms of the overall project schedule,” said BJCC Executive Director Tad Snider.

The Birmingham City Council on Tuesday vacated 100,670 feet of right of way between 15th Avenue North and 17th Avenue North, and between 22nd Street North and 25th Street North, which will be part of the footprint of the planned amphitheater.

“It will fit within the amphitheater site proper, right about where the seating plan is,” Snider said.

That allows for the property to be consolidated as the construction site.

“This step was always going to be part of the process,” Snider said.

The open-air amphitheater on 25th Street North adjacent to The Star development will sit on the 50-acre former campus of the now demolished Carraway Hospital.

“So far, we’re hitting all those important milestones to stay on target,” to finish the amphitheater by May or June 2025, he said.

Site grading and dirt work should begin by March or April of this year, Snider said.

“There’s already been some utility relocations,” he said. “There’s already been some demolition on the site. This is just that next step.

The amphitheater will be owned by the Birmingham Jefferson Convention Complex and will be managed by Live Nation, which currently operates Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in Pelham. Once the Birmingham amphitheater is built, Live Nation plans to shutter Oak Mountain Amphitheatre and book its regional concerts for the downtown Birmingham venue.
