Alabama isn’t losing two legends in one night to retirement.

While Nick Saban is stepping down as University of Alabama head football coach, the state’s preeminent meteorologist said Wednesday night he is not riding off into the sunset.

“For those asking, I’m just getting started,” said ABC 33/40 chief meteorologist James Spann, 67, in response to a fan asking on social media whether his retirement would be “the next announcement.”

“Some as they get older slow down, I speed up. No retirement for me anytime soon,” Spann said. “Full speed ahead… I feel better physically and mentally than I did 30 years ago. We have much work to do in mitigating loss of life during tornadoes… I’m not stopping anytime soon.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Spann said the devastating, deadly 2011 tornadoes that hit Tuscaloosa played a role in Saban’s longevity at Alabama.

“April 27, 2011 changed Coach Saban. It created a bond between him and the people of Tuscaloosa, and I believe that pretty much guaranteed he would finish the rest of his career there. I wish him well in retirement; I will miss our radio shows together in the fall and all of the weather briefings before games,” Spann said.

Spann has been ABC 33/40′s chief meteorologist for 25 years.
