As Saban retires, transfer portal reopens for Alabama football roster

Alabama football will need a new coach and likely even more new players following Tuesday’s news that Nick Saban is set to retire.

Per NCAA rules, the transfer portal reopens for 30 days when a coach leaves the program. The latest portal window comes after 19 active players have already left the program following a trip to the Rose Bowl.

ESPN reported that Saban informed the players of his retirement on Wednesday, giving them until Feb. 9 to decide if they want to be a part of the new regime, whoever steps in to fill Saban’s shoes. UA has already lost key depth but has welcomed in 19 mid-year enrollees and three transfers.

It should also be noted that the nine uncommitted players could technically return. Players like Malachi Moore, who has announced he’s returning, could also opt for the NFL before the Jan. 15 deadline.

The coaches remaining on staff, for now, include offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and defensive line coach Freddie Roach. A few of UA’s notable coaching losses since the season ended last week include defensive coordinator Kevin Steele (retirement) and wide receiver coach Holmon Wiggins (Texas A&M).

Attention will likely turn to younger playmakers that would be in line for large name, image and likeness deals now that boosters and collectives don’t have to recruit against one of the greatest coaches of all time. The NIL, “pay-for-play” game as Saban decried, has led to rapid movement in the sport, recently pulling star running back Quinshon Judkins from Ole Miss to Ohio State.

One key name to watch technically isn’t a member of the 2024 roster yet. Reigning Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Football Ryan Williams reclassified and is verbally committed to Alabama. He will sign next month and has visits scheduled to UA and Auburn.

Key transfers include:

  • Kristian Story (Kentucky)
  • Seth McLaughlin (Ohio State)
  • Terrence Ferguson (uncommitted)
  • Malik Benson (Florida State)
  • Eli Holstein (Pitt)
