Derrick Henry facing must-win regular-season finale

For the fifth time in running back Derrick Henry’s seven seasons with Tennessee, the Titans’ regular-season finale will affect their postseason.

Saturday night’s final regular-season game against the Jacksonville Jaguars will decide if the Titans play in the postseason. The winner of the game will be the AFC South champ and earn a first-round home game in the conference playoffs. And Tennessee must win to make the playoffs. It has no wild-card option to fall back on.

In 2017, a 15-10 victory over the Jaguars in the final regular-season game secured a wild-card spot for the Titans. Henry caught a 66-yard touchdown pass and had 51 yards on 28 rushing attempts.

In 2018, Henry ran for 93 yards on 16 carries and caught a 13-yard pass when the Titans lost a winner-take-a-wild-card game to the Indianapolis Colts 33-17 to close the season.

In 2019, with Tennessee needing to beat the Houston Texans to earn a wild-card spot, Henry had 211 yards and three touchdowns on 32 rushing attempts in a 35-14 victory.

In 2020, when a final regular-season victory would keep the Titans ahead of the Colts at the top of the AFC South standings, Henry ran for 250 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries in a 41-38 win over Houston.

As in 2019, Tennessee sidelined Henry last week for a game that had no effect on the Titans’ playoff chances. That strategy was a home run three years ago, and Henry seems ready to make it work again on Saturday night.

“I don’t feel 29 today, if that helps,” Henry said when asked about his condition with a season total of 351 touches on Wednesday, which was the former Alabama All-American’s 29th birthday. “I feel great. I got to rest, and I’m ready to get back to work.”

Tennessee broke a three-game losing streak with its wild-card clinching victory over the Jaguars in the 2017 regular-season finale. For another victory over Jacksonville to clinch a playoff spot, the Titans will have to end a six-game losing streak. Tennessee hasn’t posted a victory since downing the Green Bay Packers 27-17 on Nov. 17.

“I just think we trust and believe in the culture here, the guys here, teammates and our game plan and what we want to do, the style of football we like to play,” Henry said about the Titans’ showing in must-win games. “I think it’s just wanting to get back into that, coming to work every day with a great mindset, positive attitude and wanting to get better and pushing each other to be better.”

Henry ran for 121 yards and one touchdown on 17 carries and caught three passes for 34 yards in Tennessee’s 36-22 loss to Jacksonville last month. In 12 games against his hometown team, Henry has run for 1,264 yards and 15 touchdowns on 230 carries and caught 14 passes for 184 yards and one touchdown.

Henry’s 16 touchdowns against the Jaguars are four more than any other player has scored against Jacksonville. Henry needs 3 more rushing yards on Saturday night to pass Eddie George as the all-time rushing leader against the Jaguars, and the former Titans running back had 114 more carries against Jacksonville than the current Tennessee star has.

“They’ve been playing lights out,” Henry said about the challenge presented by the Jaguars’ defense. “Defensively, I think they play very well together. I think they’re solid from their front all the way to their secondary. The defensive line’s disruptive. The linebackers’re fast, they’re smart, they flow very well. Secondary, they tackle very well. Very experienced. They rally from each other any time they make a big play, so they’ve been playing very well in all three phases, and we know it’s going to be tough on Saturday.”

If Henry records at least 71 rushing yards and two rushing TDs on Saturday night, he would become the first NFL player with three seasons of 1,500 rushing yards and 15 rushing touchdowns. He’s one of the six players with two seasons apiece, a list that includes former Alabama standout Shaun Alexander.
