Driver flees traffic stop on I-10, struck by vehicle after running into traffic, ALEA says

A traffic stop on Interstate 10 in Baldwin County Wednesday afternoon led to a complete shutdown of the interstate after the driver fled the scene on foot, ran into traffic and was struck by a vehicle.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) said shortly after 3 p.m. all lanes of I-10 near mile marker 57 in Baldwin County were shut down after a single-vehicle crash involving a pedestrian.

Later Wednesday afternoon, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy conducted a traffic stop on the eastbound side of the interstate, east of the Wilcox exit.

During the course of the stop, the driver exited the vehicle and in an attempt to elude the deputy ran into oncoming traffic. The driver was airlifted to a local hospital. Information on his condition was not immediately known.

As of about 4:30 p.m., the westbound lanes of I-10 were open, and at 5:21 p.m. ALEA announced all lanes had reopened.

ALEA, the BCSO and the Baldwin County Major Crimes Unit are all investigating the incident.
