7-week-old puppy dies after being poisoned with antifreeze in Bessemer

Animal rights activists are seeking justice for a 7-week-old puppy that died this week after ingesting antifreeze from a bowl allegedly placed by a Bessemer homeowner angered that the pooch was going into their yard.

On Tuesday evening, the Greater Birmingham Humane Society received complaints from witnesses who observed a person in Bessemer put antifreeze in a bowl by their front yard “in an attempt to poison puppies that were next door in an abandoned house” near 30th Street, said Allison Black Cornelius, the organization’s CEO.

She said witnesses claimed the person allegedly responsible for the incident exhibited other troubling behavior toward dogs.

Witnesses “alleged that not only did [the poisoning] happen but that the individual that lives at this address frequently uses a firearm to shoot at dogs that are just passing by,” she said.

Calvin Tucker, who was in the neighborhood feeding dogs, rescued the puppy and took it to an emergency veterinary clinic in Birmingham.

Tucker said in an Instagram post he named the puppy Damar, apparently after Damar Hamlin, the Buffalo Bills safety who collapsed and suffered cardiac arrest during Monday Night Football the night before.

While Damar Hamlin continues to improve, including having his breathing tube removed, Damar the puppy succumbed to his condition.

“Unfortunately, this puppy died from the antifreeze poisoning,” Cornelius said.

She said she contacted Bessemer police about the incident, adding it is up to Lynniece Washington, the district attorney for the Bessemer Cutoff, on what charges are filed.

Cornelius said Tucker returned to the scene of the incident and rescued five of the puppy’s littermates. Three other puppies are unaccounted for, she said.

Anyone who witnessed the poisoning was asked to call CrimeStoppers at 205-254-777 or GBHS at 205-942-1211

“Let’s hope that justice is done for this puppy,” the CEO said.
