The 2024 AHSAA Kickoff Classic will feature Reeltown vs. T.R. Miller on Day 1 and Vestavia Hills vs. Carver-Montgomery on Day 2.

Brandon Dean, director of the Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association, announced the matchups on Tuesday.

Reeltown, the 2023 Class 2A state runner-up, and Class 3A T.R. Miller will officially open the high school football season in the 19th annual Kickoff Classic on Thursday, Aug.22 at Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl at 7 p.m. Vestavia Hills and Carver-Montgomery will play at 7 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 23.

“We are thrilled to have these two matchups involving four great programs steeped in tradition,” Dean said. “We appreciate the administration and coaches of each school for allowing us to highlight their programs here in Montgomery. As always, we thank Mayor Steven Reed and the City of Montgomery for their continued support of this event.”

A total of 63 different high schools have participated in the Kickoff Classic since its inception in 2006. That list includes one out-of-state school (North Gwinnett, Ga.) in 2007. The 2008 Kickoff Classic contest between Prattville and Oxford was canceled due to inclement weather.

Reeltown won its first 13 games in 2023 before losing to Fyffe 43-24 in the state championship game at Tuscaloosa’s Bryant-Denny Stadium. T.R. Miller went 8-4, losing 24-14 in the second round of the playoffs to eventual Class 4A champion Montgomery Catholic. T.R. Miller dropped to Class 3A this season. The Tigers are tied with Oneonta for the most wins in state history with 726, according to the Alabama High School Football Historical Society. Reeltown and T.R. Miller have never played.

Vestavia Hills went 9-3 in Robert Evans’ second year as head coach. The Rebels lost to state runner-up Thompson 34-14 in the second round of the Class 7A playoffs. Carver went 7-4, losing to Briarwood in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs. The two teams have played just twice before, splitting meetings in 1980 and 1981.
