Birmingham residents struggle with new 90-gallon trash cans, officials say: ‘Get your act together’

Many Birmingham residents have still not gotten the hang of putting all their trash in their new 90-gallon carts.

Too many people still put trash on the curb, not in the cart, expecting it to be picked up, city officials say.

“It’s gonna stop,” Council member Valerie Abbott said. “Get your act together.”

Since the cart system is fairly new to residents and considering that many people have extra trash after Christmas, the city has cut people some slack and picked it up anyway, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said. “We did allow a grace period,” Woodfin said.

The holidays have caused shifting of pickup days and some confusion that will continue into next week, when the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday will delay pickup by a day, he said.

“I think we’ll make the necessary adjustments,” Woodfin said.

Birmingham City Council President Darrell O’Quinn recommended that people use the city landfills to discard trash that doesn’t fit in the uniform trash carts.

“That’s a very unique citizen that would do that,” Woodfin said.

“People don’t have to let household waste rot in front of their house,” O’Quinn said. “They have the capacity to bring that to the landfill at no cost to them.”
