Drive-by shooting in east Birmingham sent one person to the hospital with critical injuries.

The gunfire erupted about 1:15 p.m. at Oporto-Madrid Boulevard and Fifth Avenue North.

Shot Spotter registered multiple rounds fired in the area and then police received calls of someone unconscious in the driver’s seat of a minivan in an intersection.

The driver was rushed to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service, followed by police.

The suspected shooter fled the scene in another vehicle.

.Police said there are shell casings in the intersection.
