5-year-old boy killed in Bessemer shooting that also injured an adult
A 5-year-old boy was fatally shot outside a Bessemer home Sunday morning.
The gunfire also left an adult male injured.
The shooting happened at 10:15 a.m. in the 500 block of Seventh Avenue North. The boy’s mother had taken her child to the home to get his hair cut.
Bessemer police Sgt. Justin Burmeister said the victims were outside when someone opened fire on the house. Multiple shots were fired.
The child and the barber were struck.
“We know someone not at the house shot towards the house,’’ Burmeister said.
The 5-year-old was taken to Children’s of Alabama where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The adult male was taken to the hospital and is in critical condition.
Burmeister said investigators are following up several leads.
“It’s terrible,’’ he said. “Our thoughts are with the family during this incredibly challenging time.”
“We are working tirelessly to gather all available information and evidence to determine the sequence of events that led to this tragic outcome,’’ he said.
The child is Bessemer’s first homicide of 2024, and third throughout Jefferson County since Friday. There were two homicides Saturday, one in Birmingham and one in Midfield.
