South Dakota State has been an unstoppable force this season and is a win away from back-to-back FCS Championships, but must first get through 13-1 Montana.

The Jackrabbits have been nothing short of spectacular the past two seasons. South Dakota State last lost 7-3 vs. Iowa in Week 1 of 2022 and has won 28 straight since then. A victory over Montana would make the Jackrabbits the fifth repeat FCS Champions.

South Dakota State was dominant in the regular season, and the success has spilled into the playoffs. The Jackrabbits have a +111-point differential in three postseason matchups.

Montana is 2-5 in its previous seven FCS Championship appearances, with the last victory coming in 2001. The Grizzlies have scratched and clawed to reach this point, earning an overtime victory over Furman in the quarterfinals and a double-OT win vs. North Dakota State in the semifinals.

Montana is all about grit, with three rushers surpassing 600 yards and a defense surrendering the fifth-fewest points in FCS. One of those ball carriers is QB Clifton McDowell, who threw for 1,861 yards, 13 touchdowns, three interceptions, and ran for nine scores.

The Grizzlies’ defensive success has been undeniable this season, but the Jackrabbits balance on both sides of the ball will be too much for Montana to handle. South Dakota State ranks third in points scored and first in points allowed.

QB Mark Gronowski was last year’s FCS Championship MVP and has a tremendous chance at claiming the award again. Gronowski passed for 2,883 yards, 28 touchdowns, and four interceptions. Gronowski is also a playmaker with his feet, rushing for 349 yards and seven touchdowns.

Gronowski’s top targets are twin brothers Jadon and Jaxon Jankle, who combined for 1,643 yards and 14 scores.

RB Isaiah Davis leads FCS with 1,491 yards and 17 touchdowns, and the Jackrabbits have two AFCA All-Americans along the offensive line.

Montana vs. South Dakota State best bets: Over 49.5 (-110 or better)

With how South Dakota State has scored this season, there’s a great chance the Jackrabbits do much of the legwork, leaving little help from the Grizzlies to cash the over. In three postseason showdowns, South Dakota State averaged 41 points per game.

Montana has also lit up the scoreboard in the playoffs, putting up 38 points per game.

The Grizzlies’ special teams have been stellar since the end of the regular season. WR Junior Bergen has three touchdowns as a kickoff and punt returner and a fourth in the FCS Championship would go a long way in the push for the over.
