SEC Football by the Numbers: Auburnâs 2023 top 10
Auburn’s 2023 season ended with a 31-13 loss to Maryland in the Music City Bowl on Saturday. The Tigers posted a 6-7 record for the 2023 season, which was their first under coach Hugh Freeze. Here are 10 numbers to illustrate Auburn’s 2023 campaign:
1 Victory in California for Auburn, which defeated Cal 14-10 in Berkeley on Sept. 9. In its previous games in the Golden State, the Tigers lost 12-0 to Santa Clara on Oct. 30, 1936, in San Francisco, 24-17 to Southern Cal on Sept. 2, 2002, in Los Angeles, and 34-31 to Florida State on Jan. 6, 2014, in Pasadena in the BCS national-championship game.
3 Consecutive games with an interception for Auburn S Jaylin Simpson. With an interception in each of the Tigers’ first three games this season, Simpson became the first Auburn player to accomplish a three-game interception streak since Jerraud Powers in 2007. After not having an interception in the Tigers’ fourth game of the season against Texas A&M, Simpson came back with a fourth interception in Game 5 against Georgia.
3 TD runs for Auburn QB Robby Ashford in the second quarter of the Tigers’ 59-14 victory over Massachusetts on Sept. 2. Ashford scored on runs of 10 yards, 1 yard and 4 yards as Auburn expanded a 10-7 lead to a 31-7 advantage in a span of 10:13. Ashford became the first Auburn quarterback to run for three touchdowns in a game since Cam Newton in a 65-43 victory over Arkansas on Oct. 16, 2010. Newton ran for 188 yards on 25 carries in that game. Ashford had 51 yards on nine rushing attempts.
4 Consecutive Auburn games included an increase in points for the Tigers, the second time that had happened in a single season in school history. After losing to LSU 48-18 on Oct. 14, Auburn lost to Ole Miss 28-21, then beat Mississippi State 27-13, Vanderbilt 31-15 and Arkansas 48-10 on successive Saturdays. The streak ended in a 31-10 loss to New Mexico State on Nov. 18. Auburn’s other occurrence of four games with increasing points occurred in 1942. After losing to Mississippi State 6-0 on Oct. 31, 1942, Auburn lost to Georgia Pre-Flight 41-14 and defeated LSU 25-7, Georgia 27-13 and Clemson 41-13 on four November Saturdays.
9 Consecutive Auburn coaches have guided their first teams to at least as many victories as their predecessor did in his final season, dating to Earl Brown in 1948, whose first team went 1-8-1 after the Tigers were 2-7 under Carl Voyles in 1947. In its first season under Hugh Freeze, Auburn posted a 6-7 record after going 5-7 under Brian Harsin in 2022. (Harsin was let go during the season with a 3-5 record.)
38 Receptions for Rivaldo Fairweather in 2023, the most in one season for an Auburn tight end. Fairweather broke the record set by John Samuel Shenker with 33 receptions in 2021. Fairweather led the Tigers in receptions in 2023 as well as receiving yards with 394 and TD receptions with six.
49 Consecutive home games against unranked non-conference opponents had been won by Auburn until the Tigers lost to New Mexico State 31-10 at Auburn on Nov. 18. It was Auburn’s first loss to an unranked non-SEC team at Jordan-Hare Stadium since a 26-23 setback against South Florida on Sept. 7, 2007. The loss also was the first for Auburn in a non-conference November game since Nov. 10, 1990, when the Tigers fell to Southern Miss 13-12. Between the losses to Southern Miss and New Mexico State, Auburn won all 24 of its non-conference games in November. New Mexico State’s victory was its first in 25 games against SEC opponents. The Aggies defeated Auburn even though New Mexico State had opened its season with a 41-30 loss to Massachusetts on Aug. 26 and the Tigers beat the Minutemen 59-14 the next week.
53 Kicks were made by Auburn’s Alex McPherson in the 2023 season, the most in the nation without a miss. McPherson made his 13 field-goal attempts and his 40 extra-point kicks. Only one other regular kicker made all his field-goal attempts – Texas State’s Mason Shipley, who was 15-for-15 – but he missed a PAT. McPherson has made his 19 field-goal attempts since he missed the first one of his career, the longest streak in school history.
219 Rushing yards for Auburn in the Tigers’ 27-20 loss to Georgia on Sept. 30. Auburn’s yardage total on 43 rushing attempts was the most yielded on the ground against the Bulldogs since LSU ran for 275 yards on 51 carries in a 36-16 victory on Oct. 13, 2018, and none of Georgia’s nine remaining opponents in 2023 reached Auburn’s output.
405 Yards of total offense for Auburn QB Payton Thorne in the Tigers’ 45-13 victory over Samford Sept. 16. Thorne completed 24-of-32 passes for 282 yards with one TD and two interceptions and ran for 123 yards and two TDs on 11 carries to record the ninth game with more than 400 yards of total offense in school history.
