Aairon Savage steps down after 1 season as Decatur’s coach
Former Auburn football player Aairon Savage has stepped down after one year as Decatur High’s head football coach.
Savage confirmed the news to AL.com following a special called meeting by the Decatur City Board of Education on Friday morning.
The Decatur Daily was first to report the move.
The Red Raiders went 3-7 in Savage’s only year at the helm, losing the final four games of the season.
Savage replaced Jere Adcock, who spent 27 years as the Decatur head coach.
The Albany, Ga., native played defensive back on Auburn’s 2010 BCS title team. He came to Decatur after coaching defensive backs for Western Illinois.
Savage also has had college coaching experience at Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Georgia State, Northern Iowa, Arkansas Tech and Army and spent time as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech and Auburn.
In his Auburn career, Savage finished with 116 tackles. He had 37 tackles in the Tigers’ 2010 season.
Other coaching news:
— Cris Bell has resigned after three years as Scottboro’s head coach. Bell went 18-15 in three seasons with the Wildcats. The team made the playoffs each of the last two seasons. He came to Scottsboro after winning 47 games in nine years at Oak Mountain.
— Robertsdale and Baldwin County are both still looking for a head football coach. The Golden Bears are looking to replace Kyle Stanford, who was relieved of his coaching duties in early October but remained as the school’s athletic director. Baldwin County High is looking to replace Scott Rials, who was fired in mid-November and is now the head coach at Calera. Baldwin County communications director Chasity Riddick told AL.com that the Board is expected to vote on Rials’ resignation this month, which would allow Baldwin County High to move forward on a replacement. She didn’t have an update on Robertsdale’s coaching situation.
