Basketball roundup: Gulf Shores girls earn OT win over UMS-Wright

Alyssa Thompson made two free throws with less than a second left in regulation and Class 5A No. 4 Gulf Shores knocked off Class 4A No. 7 UMS-Wright 57-50 in overtime Wednesday night.

The Dolphins (16-5) trailed by as many as 14 – 43-29 – in the fourth quarter before rallying.

Thompson made a steal and got fouled in the final seconds, leading to her game-tying free throws. She went 7-of-9 from the foul line and finished with 15 points.

Keyona Royal contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and seven steals. Maggie Myers had 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Noel Freeman led UMS-Wright with 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Gulf Shores opens area play at Williamson tonight.

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

Alma Bryant 59, Cottage Hill 45

Mari-Margret Grayson scored 22 points and Madi-Marie Grayson added 21 points for the Hurricanes.

Alma Bryant improved to 12-6 with the victory and will host B.C. Rain tonight.

HUNTSVILLE/TENNESSEE VALLEY

Sparkman 71, Ponchatoula (La.) 51

The second-ranked Class 7A Senators rolled over Ponchatoula, La., in the opening round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic on Thursday. Sparkman will play Parrish Community, Fla., on Friday.

Jamya Griffin led Sparkman (13-6) with 18 points. Freshman Derryn Goode and senior Abethany James scored 11 points each in the win and Laryn Scott added 9.

Alyssa Hilliard led Ponchatoula with 18 points.

Hazel Green 61, Muscle Shoals 33

Amiya Redus knocked down four 3-point buckets on the way to 27 points to lead the top-ranked Class 6A Trojans to the win at No. 9 Muscle Shoals on Tuesday. Hazel Green improved to 17-4 on the season while Muscle Shoals dropped to 9-6.

Hazel Green raced to a 22-3 first-quarter lead and carried a 38-10 margin into halftime. The Trojans led 54-16 headed into the final quarter.

Kristen Johnson scored 12 for visiting Hazel Green and Leah Brooks grabbed 5 rebounds to go with 8 points. Brett Douglas also had 5 rebounds.

Audrey Johnson scored 8 points for Muscle Shoals, 6 in the fourth quarter. Makenzie Sears also scored 8 points in the loss.

Priceville 55, Austin 34

The Class 4A Bulldogs whipped 7A Austin at home on Tuesday. Abby Langlois recorded a triple-double for the winners with 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

Fifth-ranked Priceville (11-7) led 14-6 after one quarter and 32-23 at the half. The Bulldogs led 43-30 after three periods.

Carly Nelson scored 9 points for Priceville. Ashlyn Johnson scored 8 in the win. Gracin Prater had 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals with 6 points.

Decatur 51, Danville 48

Class 6A Decatur earned the narrow win on the road on Tuesday.

Adily Alberti led Davnille with 26 points, 8 rebounds and 2 steals. Maddie Sherrill had 8 points with 3 assists and 3 steals.

BIRMINGHAM

Homewood 54, Jackson-Olin 14

The Patriots picked up a win over Jackson-Olin at home on Thursday to run their record to 17-3 and 1-0 in Class 6A, Area 9. Homewood had 10 players to score in the rout.

Ryanne Ezekiel and Laine Litton led Homewood with 9 points each. Kayla Warren added 8.

The Patriots travel to Minor on Tuesday for another area contest.

Hewitt-Trussville 59, Gadsden City 43

The seventh-ranked Huskies improved to 16-4 on the season with the home win on Tuesday over Gadsden City. Hewitt-Trussville trailed by 2 after one quarter before taking a 24-23 margin into halftime. The Huskies scored 35 points in the second half to secure the win.

Auburn University signee Jordan Hunter led the winners with 27 points. She was 4-for-4 from the foul line in the fourth quarter and finished with 7 assists. Lauryn Holley hit five 3-pointers and finished with 16 points for Hewitt.

Hewitt-Trussville travels to No. 3 Chelsea to open Class 7A, Area 6 play on Friday.

Homewood 77, Calera 21

The Patriots had 10 players hit the scoring column in the road win on Tuesday.

Mira McCool led Homewood (16-3) with 12 points. Ellis McCool scored 11 points and claimed 9 rebounds. Ava Robinson also scored 11 in the win.

STATEWIDE

Georgiana 75, Red Level 63

The Panthers picked up the home win in its Class 1A, Area 3 opener on Tuesday to improve to 5-6 on the year.

Lillie Boggan poured in 27 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Georgiana. The junior guard also had 5 assists, 5 steals and 4 blocks in the win. Nyeahsia Thomas also finished with a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Tarnasia McMeans scored 14 points, Lillyana Vargas had 12 and Grace Bradley added 10 for the Panthers.

Brantley 61, Opp 32

The Bulldogs improved to 6-4 with the road win on Thursday.

Alex Grimes scored 18 points in the win. Coco Stamps scored 14 and Anna Parker added 11 for Brantley.

BOYS

MOBILE/COASTAL ALABAMA

UMS-Wright 52, Gulf Shores 49

UMS-Wright rallied from third-quarter deficit to win a back-and-forth game over Gulf Shores at home on Wednesday. The Dolphins led 14-11 after one quarter before UMS-Wright took a 25-24 halftime lead. The visitors were up 39-36 headed into the final period.

Sims Druhan, a 6-foot-5 senior center, led the Bulldogs with 21 points. Senior forward Joe Lott pitched in 10 points in the win. Senior guard Jack Church added 9 points for UMS-Wright.

Sophomore Ryann Barnes led Gulf Shores with 19 points. Junior Matt Siquiera scored 13 in the loss.

UMS-Wright will open Class 4A, Area 1 play on Friday at home against Bayside Academy.

Williamson 77, Foley 48

The third-ranked Class 5A Lions rolled over 7A Foley at home on Thursday.

Corien Coleman led Williamson with 18 points. He also contributed 3 steals in the win. Johnathan Johnson and Mikel Bonner had 12 points apiece. Johnson grabbed 8 rebounds and Bonner had 6.

Williamson (13-4) opens Area 1 play on Friday at home against Gulf Shores.

Fairhope 60, Spanish Fort 45

Jackson Gulley had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as Fairhope won on the road.

Jackson Robertson added 15 points and three assists followed by Broder Elliason with 11 points and Jaden Champion with 10 points and 5 rebounds.

The Pirates host Mary G. Montgomery in a Class 7A non-area game on Friday.

Jackson 70, Monroe County 62

The Aggies improved to 11-2 behind 25 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots from Keeyun Chapman.

Micah Caster finished with 17 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals for Jackson. William Taylor added 14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

Monroe County was led by Al Beasley with 22 points and Lou Williams with 19.

Jackson hosts Leroy on Friday and Hillcrest-Evergreen on Saturday.

Theodore 62, Blount 59

Travis Davis scored 18 as the Bobcats evened their record at 10-10 and improved to 1-0 in area play. JJ Bush followed with 15 points and Houston Cunningham had 14.

Andrew Williams scored 21 and Jaiden Beck 16 to lead Blount.

Theodore plays at Murphy on Friday.

Robertsdale 55, Chickasaw 33

Gabe Stevens scored 21 points for Robertsdale and Tanner Williams added 19 as the Golden Bears improved to 10-8.

Sydrus Gilmore led Chickasaw with 11 points.

Robertsdale hosts McGill-Toolen tonight in a 6A, Area 2 matchup.

Vigor 98, Citronelle 63

Vigor won its second game in as many days.

The Wolves defeated Murphy 85-59 in New Orleans on Tuesday before rolling past Citronelle on Wednesday.

In the win over Citronelle, Al Holcombe scored 20 points. He was followed by Pete Jones with 18 and Terrell Johnson and PJ Holley with 11 each.

Vigor is now 14-5 overall.

BIRMINGHAM

Fairfield 56, John Carroll 30

Top-ranked Class 5A Fairfield ran its record to 15-2 on the year and 1-0 in Area 9 with the home win on Wednesday.

Jody Jones led the Tigers with 17 points. He also had 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Cove Taylor scored 14 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and had 3 assists.

Fairfield plays another area game on Friday at Pleasant Grove.

Hewitt-Trussville 58, Gadsden City 42

Senior Reid Stodghill scored the first 8 points of the game on the way to a team-high 24 as the Huskies improved to 14-6 with the home win on Tuesday. Hewitt-Trussville has won four straight.

Colt Wells scored 12 points, all in the second half, for Hewitt-Trussville. Lake Williams added 7 in the win.

Hewitt-Trussville opens Class 7A, Area 6 play on Friday at Chelsea.

STATEWIDE

Montgomery Catholic 53, Montgomery Academy 49 (OT)

The Knights outscored the home team 10-6 in the extra period to earn the win on Tuesday. Montgomery Catholic hit a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Catholic led 16-5 after one quarter and 24-12 at the half before the Eagles knotted the score with a 17-5 third-quarter edge.

Brewer Welch hit 1-of-2 free throws with 20 seconds left in the game to give Montgomery Academy a 2-point lead before the Knights sent the game into OT.

Skyler Stovall led MA with 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. DJ Vinson finished with a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Seth Edwards grabbed 9 rebounds and Cole Caddell added 6.

Montgomery Academy (12-6) will travel to Trinity on Friday to open Class 3A, Area 6 play.

Georgiana 95, Red Level 83

Four Panthers hit double figures in the Class 1A, Area 3 opener between two Top 10 teams at Georgiana. The third-ranked Panthers improved to 11-2 on the season with the win over No. 8 Red Level.

Jacobie Morgan exploded for 35 points and broke the Georgiana school record with eight 3-pointers. The junior guard also had 6 assists and 7 rebounds in the win. Kaveon Miles scored 17 points for the Panthers. Noah Nelson scored 15 and Nasir Cheatham added 10. Jaden Stallworth grabbed 11 rebounds for Georgiana.

The Panthers travel to McKenzie for another area game on Friday.

Brantley 66, Opp 46

The Bulldogs improved to 7-5 with the win at Opp on Thursday.

Jayden Parks scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win. Parks also had 5 assists and 3 steals for Brantley. Jon Harper Kilcrease hit five 3-pointers for his 15 points. Dylan Davis scored 10 and hauled in 15 rebounds. He had four assists and 3 blocked shots.
