Birmingham mother charged after 3-year-old son finds her gun, fatally shoots himself

A Birmingham mother has been charged in the death of her 3-year-old son after he found her gun and fatally shot himself.

Meosha Lakee Mayfield, 30, is charged with reckless manslaughter in the Dec. 21 death Kacey Jackson.

The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed the warrant was issued earlier this week, and states that the mother recklessly caused the death of Kacey by leaving a firearm accessible to the child.

According to Crime Stoppers, Mayfield is not yet in custody. Reckless manslaughter is a Class B felony.

Police and firefighters were dispatched at about 11:42 a.m. Thursday to Mayfield’s home on Second Avenue North. They found the child had been shot, and Kacey was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mayfield made the call to 911, and reported the toddler was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Kacey was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mayfield spoke with AL.com about the ordeal during a vigil held at the family’s home to mark what would have been Kacey’s fourth birthday.

She said Kacey found the gun which she had hidden under her bed and thought was secured.

Someone had recently tried to break into the family’s home. Mayfield felt she needed the gun for protection but thought she had it secured from the children.

“I didn’t know my baby was going to crawl under the bed,’’ she said.

“This past week has been the hardest week of my life,’’ Mayfield said. “I’ve been getting so many death threats, and everybody wants to blame me, but that was my child, I carried him, and I know I could have been more careful, but don’t you think if I could have stopped it or saved him, I would have?”

“I see that scene every day – when I came out and saw him,’’ Mayfield said. “It was just two seconds.”

Mayfield said Kacey was curious, caring, funny, unique, a daredevil.

“He was a 30-year-old in a 3-year-old’s body,’’ she said through her tears. “He was so smart.”

A 12-year-old boy was killed on Christmas Eve after he reportedly found a gun in a car and accidentally shot himself while handling the weapon in an alley off Pike Road.

In July 2023, 23-year-old Stephen D’Mitri Goldman was charged with reckless manslaughter in the June 30 death of his son, 3-year-old Kayden Goldman.

Charging documents against Goldman said he recklessly caused the death of Kayden “by leaving a loaded firearm within the reach and sight of an unattended toddler.”

In August 2023, 19-year-old Taniyah Lowery was charged with second-degree assault in the July 6 shooting of 4-year-old Kamoria Houston. Charging documents against Lowery state she recklessly caused physical injury to Kamoria with a pistol.

Lowery is Kamoria’s sister, and the charge relates to the pistol being an unsecured firearm.
