Law enforcement in Mississippi and Louisiana are searching for a Scott County, Miss., man who is suspected in the shooting death of an elderly woman, whose body was then set on fire.

Multiple media outlets in Mississippi report that Sammy Patrick is the suspect wanted in connection to the murder of 73-year-old Dee Eady, who lived in a Scott County home not far from where Patrick resided, according to WLBT in Jackson, Miss.

A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Patrick’s capture.

Deputies responded to Eady’s home about 2 p.m. Saturday, according to the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, after family members went to her home after an alert from her security system, according to WLBT.

Investigators believe Eady may also have been sexually assaulted, but are awaiting the results of an autopsy to confirm that, Scott County Sheriff Mike Lee said Tuesday. He said Eady was a widow who lived alone and it’s possible there had been interaction between the two, given the proximity of their homes, but no direct link.

Patrick is believed to have fled Mississippi into Louisiana. On Monday, he reportedly robbed a Subway in Wilkinson County, Miss., not far from the Mississippi-Louisiana state line in southwestern Mississippi. Mississippi Highway Patrol, Louisiana State Police and other agencies are involved in the manhunt.

Scott County authorities were already looking for Patrick in connection to a string of vehicle thefts prior to Eady’s murder. The vehicle he fled Scott County in and was last seen driving was a stolen Ford pickup truck.

Lee said while the search for Patrick has expanded to Louisiana, it’s important the public understands he could head in any direction.

“We definitely want people to be vigilant,” Lee told WLBT. “We don’t know what direction he’s heading. Just because we say Louisiana does not mean that he does not come back towards this area or stay in and around those parts of Mississippi.”
