Woman, 9-year-old boy killed in apparent domestic shooting in Etowah County
A woman and a young boy were killed in an apparent domestic shooting in Etowah County.
Deputies responded about 10 p.m. Tuesday to a report of someone shot on Glen Gap Road in the Highland/Tabor community, said Sheriff Jonathon Horton.
They arrived to find the woman and the 9-year-old boy both has sustained gunshot wounds. Deputies started lifesaving measures until medics arrived, but both victims were pronounced dead on the scene.
Horton said two people were taken into custody on scene and taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning.
Jacksonville State Center for Applied Forensics investigators responded and are assisting the sheriff’s office. The Highland Fire Department, Advantage Ambulance Service and Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit also assisted.
Horton said the names of all involved are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
By all accounts, he said, it was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community.
“Any death is always difficult for everyone involved, but one involving a juvenile is especially hard on all emergency first responders,’’ Horton said. “We are extremely saddened and send our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
