Jacksonville Jaguars winning with Cam Robinson
The Jacksonville Jaguars have a 7-1 record when Cam Robinson has played left offensive tackle and a 2-6 record when he hasn’t in the 2023 NFL season.
Even though quarterback Trevor Lawrence missed the game with a shoulder injury, the Jaguars defeated the Carolina Panthers 26-0 on Sunday to snap a four-game losing streak. Jacksonville lost those four games with Robinson on injured reserve because of a knee problem.
Despite what the numbers say, Robinson said his teammates can win without him.
“I’m honestly not a fan of it at all because it kind of insinuates that I have to be out there for things to go right or if I’m out there, then it’s not,” Robinson said. “That’s not the case at all. When I’m on the field, I’m just doing whatever play gets call, I’m going to block it. Whatever pass protection gets called, I’m going to do my best to block it.
“It’s not Cam or lose, because that’s not the type person I am. It’s about all of us. When we’re not playing well, we all got to do a better job. When we are playing well, we all need to focus on what we need to do better as well, so I’m not really a fan of that narrative.”
But Jaguars running back Travis Etienne said having Robinson on the field makes a difference.
“He just brings that veteran presence,” Etienne said after Sunday’s game. “He’s been here. He’s been through everything with the Jaguars. He understands what it was like when they were winning no games, and now he knows what it feels like with success. He just has the aura about him, and I feel it just kind of feeds off to the other guys. He just means so much to the offensive line, the team, to all of us, and I feel like when he’s out, you definitely notice.”
Robinson came off injured reserve on Saturday and went right into his spot in the lineup.
“It felt good,” Robinson said. “I was able to get back out there and kind of just run around, fly around a little bit. I’ve still got stuff we need to get better on. Still stuff I need to keep working on, but that’ll come.”
With Lawrence out of the lineup, Jacksonville ran for 155 yards, its second-highest total of the season and best since Oct. 8.
“I’m an offensive lineman,” Robinson said. “Anytime we can run the ball, that’s kind of what we want to do. We got great backs. We just got to keep doing a better job putting them in good positions and putting them in the best positions to be successful. …
“We just knew what we had to do. We knew what we had in front of us. We knew the task wasn’t going to be easy. I think the thing we did best was kind of just lock in and focus on the basics. We didn’t try to make anything too complicated. We didn’t try to make too much of the situation. We just stayed calm and locked in and focused on the work.”
Robinson didn’t quite make it to the end of his comeback game, with officials sending him off with 5:03 to play after he and Carolina defensive tackle Derrick Brown got in a tussle.
“He just pulled my helmet off, so I pulled his off,” Robinson said.
Because Robinson played at Alabama and Brown at Auburn, the dustup had Iron Bowl overtones, but the players were on the field together only once in college in Robinson’s final season with the Crimson Tide and Brown’s first season with the Tigers.
Robinson was asked about playing against Brown in the Iron Bowl.
“I don’t remember,” Robinson said. “What we used to do to Auburn – I don’t remember.”
Sunday’s victory lifted Jacksonville to 9-7 for the 2023 season – the same record as the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts at the top of the AFC South.
On the final weekend of the regular season, the Texans and Colts will square off at 7:15 p.m. CST Saturday in Indianapolis and the Jaguars will visit the Tennessee Titans at noon Sunday.
The winner of the Texans-Colts game will secure a spot in the AFC playoff field and the loser’s season will be over. The spot will be as a wild-card on the road unless the Jaguars lose.
Jacksonville holds the tiebreaker advantage over its division rivals, and if the Jaguars win, they take the AFC South’s playoff spot and the accompanying first-round home game. Jacksonville would be the No. 4 seed and open the postseason against the Cleveland Browns.
If the Jaguars lose on Sunday, then the winner of the Texans-Colts game will get upgraded to the AFC South’s playoff spot. But Jacksonville won’t necessarily be eliminated.
The Jaguars could make the playoffs even if they lose, but they need the Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos to lose, too (barring any ties). The Steelers visit the Baltimore Ravens at 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The Broncos visit the Las Vegas Raiders at 3:25 p.m. Sunday.
