Oregon’s Bo Nix, Alabama native, headed to Senior Bowl

Bo Nix is returning to the state of Alabama.

The Oregon quarterback – and former Auburn star – has accepted an invitation to participate in the 2024 Reese’s Senior Bowl, game officials announced Wednesday.

No. 8 Oregon dismantled No. 18 Liberty 45-6 in the Fiesta Bowl on Monday, and, in doing so, quarterback Bo Nix set an NCAA single-season completion percentage record to break Mac Jones’ record at Alabama.

Nix, the Alabama native, threw for 363 yards and five scores on 28 of 35 passing. He also broke Marcus Mariota’s Oregon single-season records for passing yards and touchdowns.

The quarterback connected on 77.44 percent of his passes, surpassing Jones, who had 77.36 percent accuracy for Alabama in 2020.

On Monday, Nix completed 24 of 27 at one point, including a stretch of 14 in a row. All five touchdown passes went to different receivers. Nix’s fifth passing touchdown — which tied a Fiesta Bowl record — came early in the third quarter on a trick play with a reverse and then a flea-flicker. The quarterback handed off to Tez Johnson, who handed off to Gary Bryant, who flipped back to Nix, who threw it to Johnson for a 24-yard touchdown.

The Heisman Trophy finalist’s five-year college football career, which included three years at Auburn before two at Oregon, ended as one of the most productive.

Nix, 23, finishes with 15,352 career passing yards (fifth in FBS), trailing only Houston’s Case Keenum, Hawaii’s Timmy Chang, Oklahoma’s Landry Jones and Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell. His 16,965 total yards are second behind Keenum.

Nix spent three up-and-down seasons at Auburn. The Pinson native was the SEC’s Freshman of the Year in 2019, but struggled with consistency as the Tigers suffered through disappointing seasons in 2020 and 2021.

Other notable players committed to the 2024 Senior Bowl include North Carolina State linebacker (and Butkus Award winner) Payton Wilson, Missouri defensive lineman Darius Robinson, Texas defensive linemen Byron Murphy and (and Outland Trophy winner) T’Vondre Sweat, Texas A&M defensive lineman McKinnley Jackson, Kansas State offensive lineman Cooper Beebe, South Carolina quarterback Spencer Rattler and wide receiver Xavier Legette, North Carolina wide receiver Tez Walker, Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton, Tulane quarterback Michael Pratt, Georgia center Sedrick Van Pran and Iowa punter (and Ray Guy Award winner) Tory Taylor. Players will be continue to be added as game week approaches.

The 2024 Senior Bowl, sponsored for the first time this year by the NFL Players Association, kicks off at noon on Feb. 3. NFL Network will televise the game live.
